The European Academy of Surface Technology (east) is a non-profit organisation which represents an International Platform for Science and Technology and an Interface between Research and Application in all areas of Surface Technology.

The overall objective of east is the Europe-wide promotion of science, research, training and education in the fields of surface technology and related areas. The basis for the accomplishment of these tasks is the European Board of east, where nearly each European State is represented by leading specialists in surface technology. For realisation of projects of an European dimension in the area of education, further training and research, east closely co-operates with the institutions of the European Commission.

On the potential of combining dry and wet coating processes

The aim of the present whitepaper is to recommend future directions for the European surface technology industry to remain relevant and competitive, and furthermore, to suggest supportive actions stimulating this development. This is done from a pan-European view based on an analysis of the potential of combining dry (typically PVD) and wet (typically electrolytic) coating processes for obtaining optimal functionality. The work has been carried out by a group of European experts representing different sectors and regions.

Since 1990, every year east forum promote in a two‐day international conference surface finishing and engineering by scientific and personals contacts of science and engineering from industry and academia. In this way, east forum predominates the activities of east in order to contribute to integration, understanding and friendship between European people and individuals.

The Schwäbisch Gmünd

Prize for Young Scientists

The Schwäbisch Gmünd Prize for Young Scientists is given in the name of the town of Schwäbisch Gmünd, where east has had its headquarter since its foundation in 1989. The town of Schwäbisch Gmünd has always been a strong support for east and has a long tradition of craftsmanship of precious metals. The Schwäbisch Gmünd Prize for Young Scientists was given for the first time 2017, but is going to be awarded every year to promising young scientist.

The mission of the European Academy of Surface Technology (east) is to promote Europe-wide science, research, training and education in the field of surface technology and related areas in order to contribute to the integration, understanding and friendship between European people and individuals.

Scientific Exchange Grant

The grant is given in the name of the town Schwäbisch Gmünd, where east has had its headquarter since its foundation in 1989. The town of Schwäbisch Gmünd has always been a strong support for east and has a long tradition of craftsmanship of precious metals. The Schwäbisch Gmünd Scientific Exchange Grant is established in celebration of the 30 years anniversary of east and is given for the first time 2020/2021.
